Shaheed Sagor

At North Bengal Sugar Mills Ltd. in Gopalpur, Natore district, around one hundred people, including officers, laborers, and staff, were mercilessly gunned down by Pakistani soldiers on May 5, 1971. The incident took place on the staircase of a pond within the main mill premises. This pond, now known as “Shaheed Sagar” by locals, became a grim reminder of the atrocity. Additionally, in Lalpur Upazila, a skirmish occurred on March 30, 1971, followed by the shooting of Major Reza Khan by the public. To hinder Pakistani army movements, locals rendered the Iswardi Airport inactive. Despite the volatile situation, the mill continued operations until May 5, 1971, when Pakistani soldiers, aided by Rajakaars, stormed in and killed Lt. Anwarul Azim and other employees. Their bodies were dumped in the pond, later renamed Sagor Dighi post-liberation. In 1973, Gopalpur railway station was renamed Azimpur Station in memory of Lt. Anwarul Azim.
