Bhola District

Bhola District (Barisal Division) Area: 3403.48 sq km. Location: 21°54′ to 22°52′ North Latitude and 90°34′ to 91°01′ East Longitude. Boundaries: Lakshmipur and Barisal districts on the north, Bay of Bengal on the south, Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts on the east, Meghna River and Shahbazpur channel, Patuakhali and Barisal districts on the west and Tentulia river.

Population 1776795; Male 884069, Female 892726 (Census 2011). Muslims 1630460, Hindus 72275, Buddhists 99, Christians 68, and others 215 (Census 2001).

Bhola District

Administration Bhola subdivision was formed in 1845 under Noakhali district. Amania in Daulatkhan was then its administrative center. In 1869 the subdivision was merged with Barisal. At that time, this subdivision was formed with two police stations named Daulatkhan and Borhanuddin Hat and three outposts named Taltali, Gazipur and Tajmuddin. In 1876, the sub-divisional headquarters was shifted from Daulatkhan to Bhola. Bhola Municipality was formed in 1920. It was converted into a district on 1 February 1984. Among the seven upazilas of the district, Char Fashion Upazila is the largest (1106.31 sq km) and the smallest is Borhanuddin (284.66 sq km).

Char Kukri-Mukri

Char Kukri-Mukri is a green land of natural beauty at the estuary of Meghna and Tentulia rivers along the shores of the Bay of Bengal. The main attractions of this resort are the mangrove forests and clean beaches that are almost uncrowded. Although there are many seabirds here throughout the year, the entire island turns into a bird sanctuary in winter. Apart from this, the struggling lifestyle of fishermen can be seen on the island. However, as there is no government initiative to develop tourism in this place, there are no facilities for tourists. Besides, there are two separate chars namely Char Patila and Dhalchar, Char Nizam, Char Sakuchia, Char Newton, Char Aicha.

Manpura Island

Manpura Island is an isolated land in Bhola district of Bangladesh. The Meghna River flows to the east, west and north of Manpura Island and the Bay of Bengal to the south. It is one of the most beautiful places in Bangladesh and a great tourist attraction of Bhola. Manpura also has several Chars named Char Jatin, Kalu Ghazi’s Char, Char Oran, Char Faizuddin. Manpura can be reached by launch from the district headquarters. Manpura has a rest house of Water Development Board and Forest Department to stay. Besides, there are some quality hotels to stay in Manpura Bazar.

Bir Shrestha Mustafa Kamal Memorial Museum

About three kilometers from Bhola Sadar is the house of Mustafa Kamal, the greatest soldier who gave his life in the liberation war in Alinagar Union. He was martyred in the war with Pak invaders in 71. To commemorate his contribution to the independence of the country, the government has set up Bir Shresh Mustafa Kamal Memorial Museum here. The place can be reached by rickshaw from the city.

Independence Museum

Freedom Museum has been set up at Banglabazar area of ​​Bhola under the initiative of Tofail Ahmed Board of Trustees to tell the true history of the Great War of Independence to the young generation. It is a perfect tourist spot for those who want to know about the liberation war of Bangladesh. Renowned architect Ferdous Ahmed has designed this attractive recreation center in Bhola built on nearly an acre of land.

Nizam Hasina Mosque

Located in Bhola, the only island district of Bangladesh, the Nizam Hasina Mosque is the largest mosque in southern Bangladesh. The Nizam-Hasina Foundation has erected the two-storied building on about one and a half acres of land in Vakil Para of Bhola town. Different colored marble stones have been used in the construction of this beautifully carved Nizam Hasina Mosque. It is a famous tourist place in Bhola.

Jacob Tower

Jacob Tower or Charfashan Tower is the tallest watch tower in the subcontinent located at Charfashan in Bhola district. Designed similar to the Eiffel Tower, this 16-story tower has a capacity of 500 spectators per floor and 500 people across the 16 floors.

The modern Jacob Watch Tower has a transparent glass capsule elevator for tourists to climb up. Constructed entirely of steel structure, the tower can withstand 8-magnitude earthquakes. Transparent glass has been used around the tower.

History and famous people of Bhola district

The canal at Bhola Sadar was very wide in ancient times. The canal was known as Betua Nadi. People used boats to cross the river. There was an old sailor who used to cross the river every day. His name was Bhola Gazi Patni. The district is named after this famous boatman Bhola Gazi. Other sub-districts of this district are also named after famous people. Famous people of Bhola district are Mustafa Kamal (Bir Shrestha), Major Hafizuddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) and many others.
